So my grandfather walked into our local Subaru into the dealership with this:
Maybe 54k on the clock?
He broke the passenger side mirror on a pole. Took the red plastic off. Told us he was taking it to the dealership to get fixed. Said was possibly considering trading for a Jeep. Kept talking about his Blue 2-door 89 Stickshift Wrangler that he owned when I was a kid. For months.
Returns from the dealership with this:
I'm really confused. We all hated the last one. But at least you could've selected between gears 1 and 4. CVT. This doesn't even have fog lights. No options. Blank buttons everywhere. No explanation. He was gone for 30 minutes.
"Did you test drive it?" No. "Did you ask about options or look at any of the other vehicles?" No. "Did you think about getting a Jeep or an Impreza?" Those are nice, I guess, but no. "What did you do when you got there? What did you say? Why?" I told them to give me another one. "Really?" Really. "Did you pick the color?" No. "Do you like it?" No. "Are you keeping it?" I don't know.
I don't get old people.
500 miles...I think we're stuck with it now.

Well, your grandfather just made the dealership VERY Happy. But, why didn't he said no if he didnt even like it?!
Cool story though.

Same thing happened to my aunt. I'm not saying all dealerships are like this, but lots of them will take advantage of older people. When other family members come along after the purchase and say "woah, I'm not sure this is ok... let's see if we can get this straightened out." the dealership comes back and says, "Well, here's their signature, tough shit. We can't (read: won't) do anything for you!"
It's sad, but anything for them to make a buck. Good luck to you in hopefully getting this straightened out!

My grandma had a '91 Chevy Lumina that she bought new and kept until 2008. Total miles driven in 17 years: 41,000.
She traded it in on a base model '08 Pontiac G6 "Value Leader" (a.k.a. stripper with plastic hubcaps).
When she was telling me about getting a new car, she said she picked the G6 because "it was the most simple." I asked what she meant by "most simple," and she explained that "all these new cars have so many buttons and dials and switches and nonsense, and this one was the most simple." Well ok then.
The first time I drove her around in the thing (ever since I got my learner's permit I've had standing orders from my parents to drive grandma rather than let her drive) the brights were left on. I guess the headlight switch wasn't quite simple enough. Who knows how long she had been driving around blinding people.

Stealerships. You know, they "make sure the car makers don't rip us off".

I was actually just thinking why can't car makers sell their cars directly? It's kind of like alcohol companies who can't sell their elixir of the gods products directly either.

I had one of these as a loaner when my WRX was getting something checked out. The CVT is really not bad. I liked it.
It's too bad he got a stripper. You can't buy a Forester without the massive moonroof.

They should make a Passat TDI Old Person Edition
No bells and whistles. Cheaper. And only sold to people over 65

Not sure if you frequent the front page or not, but this was posted today and reminds me of your situation almost exactly, and also demonstrates further the comment I made regarding the issue...
